Enemies, Rebels and Traitors, 2025
hand harvested, hand split ash wood, braided sweet grass, archival paper and ink, birch bark. 11.5" x 7.25" x 5" basket have woven language in the cover from an actual printed copy of the 1755 Proclamation issued by King George II of England through the Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts calling for a bounty (in English pound currency) on the scalp of every male, female and child member of my tribe, the Penobscot Nation in Maine. My direct ancestors are survivors of this attempted genocide. The Union Jack flag is woven (archival paper) into each side of the basket. Birch bark (aka paper birch) striping illustrates how I believe my Penobscot ancestors would have communicated with each other about the danger/killings, in that it is a well known practice that they (Wabanaki people) used to leave birch bark symbolic notes for each other on trees. This "paper" in direct contrast to the paper proclamation. Please see other views for more detail.
